Ronda Rousey has been known as one of the best mixed martial arts fighters over the past couple of years. In my opinion, Rousey has single handedly made women’s MMA fighting relevant in pop culture, and she has actually become quite a celebrity during her relatively short, thirteen fight professional career. Rousey has been known as something of a trash talker, and her perfect record gave her words fuel, but on Saturday night the unstoppable legend of “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey came crashing to an end. This weekend, during the UFC 193 event, Holly Holm managed to not only defeat the previously unbeaten Ronda Rousey, but to do it with a knock out. This weekend’s fight was a perfect example of pride literally coming before the fall, Rousey is known for being extremely prideful, and she shows very little respect for her opponents before her fights. On Saturday, Rousey came to the ring with her usual pridefulness, and refused to touch gloves with her opponent before the match, it seemed like it would be business as usual, but Holm used Rousey’s strengths against her in what ended up being a second round knockout. I have to admit, I was rooting for Rousey since I never thought she would lose, but this match definitely ended with the best possible outcome. Rousey needed to be humbled, she was quickly becoming the only star of UFC, and her “invincibility” was going to her head. This fight showed all fans of MMA, that unlike boxing, there can not be one dominant and unbeatable force. I expect Rousey to be back in the octagon in a few months, hopefully when she returns, a bit of humility will be accompanying her to the ring.
